Best Way to Keep Your Cat From Getting Injuries

Best Way to Keep Your Cat From Getting Injuries

When you have a pet like a cat it is important to ensure it remains in a safe environment at your home. The last thing you want to happen is for your cat to be injured in some way. Cat injuries occur from other pets, access to dangerous spaces, and from eating or drinking dangerous substances.

The first thing you need to be sure of is that your cat has water available to it at all times. You may only feed your cat once a day but you should always maintain a full bowl of water. This is because if you do not your cat will find something to drink elsewhere. You don’t want your cat drinking out of the toilet, especially if you use those toilet bowl cleaners. Your cat ingesting detergent like this could become very ill or even die. There should not be any liquids sitting around the home that your cat could ingest. This includes an old bowl of milk that is from a week ago or other dishes that you leave for long periods of time.

Cats are best when you have just a cat. They are known for their enjoyment and happy life when it is just them. The best way to ensure the safety of your cat is not to get a dog after you have had your cat for a long time, especially a big dog. Many people don’t understand that it is animal instinct to attack a cat when the dog gets bigger. Even if the cat and dog grow up together, there is no guarantee the dog will not attack your cat. If you do have cats and dogs both it is important that you provide a place where the cat can be and the dog is not allowed. This will be a place where your cat feels safe from harm and centered.

Cats are known for jumping high in places and exploring the house. Your cat is going to check out every cupboard and nook and cranny it possibly can. It is common to find a cat in cabinet drawers, the dryer, and other spaces that might be warm or hidden. When you safety proof your home for your cat be sure there are no hidden spaces that are dangerous for your cat. If there is a hidden space with nails and dangerous items this could cause injury to your cat when trying to exit the area. Deep cuts are hard to treat on a cat and expensive when you take your cat to a veterinarian.

There are many steps you can take to ensure you are providing the safest environment for your cat possible. The last thing you want to do is find out that you are responsible for an injury that happened to your cat and you could have prevented it. Pet injuries are extremely expensive to treat when you do not have pet medical insurance. Most people do not. Your pet is a part of your family and you need to take care of your cat properly.

From Mummies to T-shirts: the History of Cats

Some 5000 years ago (recent studies say about 100.000 years ago, but who’s counting) a smart – and hungry – African Wildcat somewhere in (what was then) Upper Egypt made a clever observation. “These strange and mysterious bipeds seem to be very fond of grain”, he thought. “Biped collects lots of grain and keeps it in big baskets. Big baskets of grain attract lots of yummy mice! Biped doesn’t seem to like mice in his grain! I think I’ll adopt one of these strange bipeds and live in his house and EAT HIS MICE FOR HIM!”

And thus a mutually beneficial relationship between smart African cats and strange Egyptian bipeds began! And history was made.

Life in Egypt was good and the African cats enjoyed their newly discovered coexistence with human beings; the Egyptians liked cats, the pharaoh LOVED cats and there was plenty of food around, but still… So after having lived the good life in Egypt for about a thousand years or so, cats – being curious animals! – started wondering: “What is outside this country. Are we missing out on something?!”

One cat thought: “I would like to sit outside a temple with one paw raised, beckoning people to enter that holy place. That would be neat! My skills and talents would totally fit that job description”. The cat told this to a Mediterranean merchant, who was in Egypt on a business trip, and the merchant said: “I know of such a place. I’ll take you there”. And the merchant brought the cat to Japan, where the cat found a nice-looking five stories pagoda temple with a beautiful garden.

The cat positioned himself outside the temple and raised his paw in a friendly manor to beckon passers-by to enter the temple, for that was now his job! The Japanese people had never seen anything like it, but they liked what they saw and they said: “This little animal has an air of holy mystery about him, this animal will bring us luck! We shall call this animal Maneki Neko and we shall make lots of little porcelain Maneki Neko figurines that we shall sell to tourist and make lots of money! …in about 4000 years.”

A couple of elderly cats were so tired of the never-ending African heat and drought and told another visiting trader (in town to buy small pyramid replicas for his novelty shop in London), that they would like to go to a cooler and wetter climate. The trader, of course, brought them back to England. The English being… well, ENGLISH, said: “I say! What positively lovely little creatures. We shall take them in, feed them and breed them and have magnificent CAT SHOWS!” The whole cat show thing came much later of course (in 1871 to be precise), but, believe me, the idea was born the second the very first Englishman (or it might… it PROBABLY was an EnglishWOMAN) laid eyes on those cats.

But England wasn’t the only European country where the Egyptian cats set paw. Around 2000 B.C. the cats of Egypt started a very successful worldwide marketing campaign, promoting their exceptional mouse and rat hunting skills. And it paid off! Soon cats were being invited to every European country, the Middle East and Asia, where they lived well and in harmony with the human bipeds for many, many years. But then something happened:

ENTER THE DARK AGES! …in the history of cats. Right after the end of the middle ages – beginning around 1550 and lasting about a century – the Christian church decided that cats were the source of all evil. Cats had always been associated with gods; in Egypt it was Bast, goddess of life and family and in the northern part of Europe it was Freya, who was always surrounded by cats. But these were not Christian gods, so cats now became “animala non grata”. This was probably when the saying “curiosity killed the cat” entered the English vocabulary; “They wanted to see the world, and look where it got them!” Yes, curiosity did kill a lot of cats during these terrible times. Cats were hunted down, burned, drowned and hanged. And people who had the audacity to so much as look kindly at a cat, were deemed witches. And they were killed as well. This was NOT a good time to be a “crazy cat lady” in Europe!

During this time cats were also being blamed for spreading the plaque, when in fact it was the disease-carrying rats that managed to kill off almost half the European human population by spreading plagues and other epidemics. And as the humans had so efficiently killed off most of their cats, there were practically none left to kill the rats! That’ll teach them to treat cats so disrespectfully!!!

But eventually things got better. The Europeans came to their long lost senses and realized that cats were actually good to have around! Less rats, no more plague and soon the former so beautiful and harmonic cat-human relationship made its come-back. And when the first European settlers came to America in 1600-something, they brought cats with them to THE NEW WORLD. Good thinking! Their cats kept their homes, farmhouses, henhouses, outhouses and doghouses rat and mice free. Well, maybe not doghouses!

Yes, the human bipeds truly rediscovered the value of cats. They took cats into their homes again and this time into their hearts as well. The cat became more than a useful little mousetrap, it became a PET.

And so cats – being cats – now started to claim their INDOOR territory; the couch, the best arm chair, the dining table, the bed, the lingerie drawer… in short: THE WHOLE HOUSE. And finally things were as they should be between cat and man.

5000 years ago the Egyptians worshipped cats and showed their admiration and respect by mummifying them after death and depicting them on vases, amulets, rings and inside tombs! Today we pay homage to cats by putting pictures of cats on coffee mugs, napkins, sofa pillows, mousepads, clocks, refrigerator magnets and t-shirts! And in a thousand years from now, I’m sure there will be an enormous image of a cat on our first spaceship to Mars.

Martine Carlsen was 6 years ago adopted by two silver-gray Abyssinian cats, Sonny and Cher, and if you ask them, this article would or could never have been written without their help and inside knowledge. Cat Treats From Homemade Recipes

There are so many options available to the health conscious cat owner. Do I buy manufactured food and cat treats? If I buy manufactured, should I buy canned or dry? What fresh ingredients are the best for my cat?

While you must make the decision about whether to go manufactured, fresh, or a combination of the two, you should know there are lots of options about preparing your own healthy, tasty cat treats. There are also some things to remember about the best nutrition for your cat.

Cats need a combination of dry and moist food choices. The moist choices usually provide the more natural dietary needs cats have as true carnivores. The protein content is usually higher, providing them with more of what they need in each feeding. Yet moist foods have less filler, so it may take more food to fill kitty’s tummy.

The dry choices are also important. They do help to satisfy the cat’s hunger. I think we would go broke trying to keep our cat Tommy full on only canned cat food products! Second, the crunchy texture of the dry cat food choices provides dental care for your cat. Keeping teeth clean is an important aspect of his health, and it avoids the unpleasant sedation required for the vet to clean them.

Purchasing the variety of foods and cat treats necessary to keep your cat at its optimum health can be burdensome, both in the quantity of products you purchase and the space to store them, but also financially. One alternative to purchasing is to make your own cat food.

So many choices are available for a cat owner who wants to make his own foods. There are recipes available for kitty biscuits and crunchy treats. There are recipes for chicken and fish meals. There are recipes for those who desire to add a vegetable based element to their cat’s diet.

Some of my favorite cat treat recipes are so easy to make, and Tommy absolutely loves them. It’s as if he tastes the love that goes into preparing them! I have a couple recipes for kitty cookies, which we give Tommy as treats. The one he likes best is a flour-based recipe, and it includes wheat germ, and molasses.

Another of Tommy’s favorite recipes is a chicken and broth mixture rolled in a tortilla. The texture of the chicken blended with the broth is very similar to a canned cat food, and when it is rolled in a tortilla and sliced, it is very convenient to reward him every so often with a tasty treat. This recipe has to be refrigerated, and it can only be kept a few days before you run the risk of food poisoning.

Believe it or not, another favorite of Tommy’s is a kitty taco. This one is so easy for me to make anytime I brown ground beef for my family meal. It includes bone meal and cheese, which always brings Tommy running.

If you want a daily cat food instead of just cat treats you may consider a fish-based or a chicken-based homemade recipe. Tommy is a fan of anything that is made fresh. One of the greatest benefits of making your own cat food is you know exactly what quality of ingredients is going into the food. You can be assured your cat is getting choice cuts of fish and chicken, rather than animal by-products. Also, if you choose to add a vegetable component to your cat’s diet, you are certain that your cat is not getting leaves, stalks and other plant by-products that can be found in some manufactured foods.

I have the luxury of taking the time to cook for my cat and my family, but that was not always the case. If you find yourself on a busy schedule, and stepping foot in the kitchen to cook for the cat makes you cringe, you might consider a couple options.

First, plan your cat’s diet around your family’s diet. When you fix fish for the family, purchase a little extra to turn into cat treats. When you make a batch of cat food, it will only last a couple days in the refrigerator. Any cat can eat the same meal a couple days in a row, if it is a fresh, homemade option.

Second, use a couple hours on a weekend or free evening to prepare several recipes at once. You can freeze these homemade options until you are ready to use them. While you are preparing some of the perishable items, you may also opt to mix up a couple batches of homemade treats, which last longer and usually don’t need refrigerating.

Cat owners love their cats, and we want them to have the best diet without breaking the bank or our schedules. There are lots of cat treat recipes that cats love and they require only a little extra time to prepare them. If your cat is anything like Tommy, he will love the time and effort you put into preparing his meals. You can provide your cat with the safest, most beneficial diet by using some innovative, simple homemade cat treats recipes.

For a great list of some of Tommy’s favorite cat treats recipes, visit Cat Treats Recipes and download the free copy of homemade recipes. Enjoy!

Pet Store – Make Sure That You Buy A Pet From A Licensed Dealer Only

Many people look to the pet store when it comes to purchasing their first pet or an addition to their family. However, even though pet stores have been around for many, many years some people have never set foot into one, or really have no idea what it can offer.

In a pet shop, you can find several different animals. In general, they only keep smaller animals; you will likely not find many stores that offer horses or other very large pets. In most cases, you can find a host of smaller animals. You will always find a great number of cats and dogs. Generally, these will be kittens and puppies; it is unlikely that you will find older pets.

You will also find some birds of many different species, lizards, snakes, fish, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, and even spiders. Many children take great joy in walking into a pet shop and being able to pet the animals or talk to the birds, in hopes they will talk back.

However, animals are not all you will find here. You will find all the supplies you need to take care of your new pet or one you have had for years. You can find food for a variety of different animals, as well as aquariums, or other housing you may need for your pet. You will even find things to help you take care of sick animals or fun toys to play with your pet. To put it plainly, no matter what you need for your pet, the pet store will have it.

The pets are kept in cages for a good part of the time, especially when the pet shop is closed for the evening. However, these animals are often loved just as much as the pets the employees have at home. During the day, you will often find a few animals running around the store or playing in areas of the store getting some playtime with visitors and employees. They are adequately cared for and are given any shots or examinations needed by a veterinarian that the shop employs.

But this is not the case everywhere. A majority of pet shops keep animals in pathetic condition and treat the caged animals cruelly. It is always advisable to get a pet from a licensed store like the USDA.

A USDA pet shop buys its pets only from breeders who are USDA licensed and meet the criteria set forth by the AWA. This means that you are getting a pet that has come from a licensed breeder that is required by law to maintain the proper facilities and veterinary care for those animals. The USDA inspects these breeders often and violations carry strict penalties.

Summary:

Many people look to the pet store when it comes time to purchase their first pet or an addition to their family. However, even though pet stores have been around for many, many years some people have never set foot into one, or really have no idea what it can offer.

Christmas Pet Shopping: Will our Pets Suffer From the Poor Economy?

Christmas Pet Shopping: Will our Pets Suffer From the Poor Economy?

In such a volatile and fragile economic environment, the consumers’ normal tendency is to cut back on spending.

But in doing so, many people do not realize that they often end up buying a lesser quality product, which ultimately has to be replaced more often than if they had invested in higher valued (and often better quality- after all, there is great truth in the expression “you get what you pay for”…) merchandise.

The wise thing to do is to look for a few criteria when purchasing any item, including pet products.

Functionality, quality, safety, durability, price and of course style.

Whiner and Diner is a pet product company which puts high value on all of the above.

Their wine crate Eco-luxury dog and cat accessories are functional, high quality, durable, safe and healthy for pets. Because they are expertly hand-crafted out of reclaimed wooden wine crates, they are indeed stylish and Eco-friendly to boot.

They simply offer great value and are made in the USA.

Check out the Whiner and Diner pet toy boxes in any color, but red or green would make a great Holiday gift for any wine and pet lover.

And why not fill it with cute, pet toys to complete the ultimate Christmas gift.

And let’s not forget our less fortunate furry friends: the US economy is in dire straits, and too many pets are paying the price. The raising number of abandoned dogs and cats is becoming overwhelming. Our shelters are filling up with “foreclosure pets”, given up by owners affected by the economic turmoil.

“Sorry, I can’t pay my mortgage, I can’t take care of my kids, I can’t take care of my dog…Please, take care of him…” reads a note attached to a dog tied to a shelter’s front door. This is just heartbreaking!

But we can all help: donate what you can (pet food, clothing, toys, etc…) to your local shelter, visit The Human Society to find out how you can help them.

And if you are thinking about giving a pet as a Chritmas gift to a friend or a family member, please don’t!!! Unless it has been discussed with the gift recipient, it is not a good idea! Too many Christmas Pets end up in shelters after the Holiday Season.

Instead, give a Pet Adoption certificate from you local shelter , along with a book about animal care and training, and let them decide…Hopefully, they will rescue a dog or cat from the shelter.

There are many ways to help restore our economy. And refueling it by spending our money is one of them! We just need to do it wisely!

Why Not to Buy a Puppy from a Pet Shop?

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Why Not to Buy a Puppy from a Pet Shop?

We all have visited pet shops and seen those cute puppies that they sell. Sometimes, we cannot stand looking at their sad faces through the small cages in which they spend their entire day. Your kid comes to you and begs you to buy them that puppy. In a way, you feel guilty if you do not buy that cute puppy. By buying the puppy, you feel that you have helped the animal and also made your kid happy. The truth is that you have not helped the other puppy who will replace the one you just bought and will face the same treatment – i.e. mistreatment.

Puppies that end up at pet stores or pet shops are puppies bred by irresponsible breeders. These are breeders who only breed for volume and profit. They have so many puppies that they cannot find a good home for all of them. So what do they do? They sell the puppy to a pet shop for 0, and then the pet shop keeps the puppy until someone comes along and buys the puppy for ,000. These puppies are usually not properly health checked and they will not let you to see their parents. The puppies are bred by puppy mills whose main goal is to profit, and profit a lot. In order to do that, they have to have many litters a year to sustain their business. They also need to have someone who will buy them after they distribute them to these pet shops. Someone buying the puppy from the pet shop will only help the puppy millers continue with their high-volume breeding.

Puppies that are kept in crates or cages for the first few months of their lives are not socialized properly. They come in contact with a lot of people and see other puppies, but this is not proper socializing. Being behind bars or glass and having people look at you is not something that will make anyone feel relaxed. As a result, many puppies from pet shops have behavior problems when brought home and can suffer from stress and anxiety. They are also harder to housetrain or housebreak. They will eat, poo, and pee in the same place – their crate/cage – because they had nowhere else to do it while living at the pet shop. Housetraining is one of the most important things to teach a puppy. If not taught on time, you will have to clean up mess for the rest of the dog’s life.

Pet shops will usually overprice the puppies because it costs them money to pay for workers, rent, and taking care of the puppies while they are still waiting for a buyer (which can take many months). You will find puppies that are of much better quality directly from responsible breeders and that cost less than a puppy from a pet shop. Even if they tell you at the pet shop that the puppy is purebred, you will never know for sure until the puppy grows up. They might give you some papers saying that the puppy is purebred but on many occasions those papers end up being falsified.

Many puppies bought from pet shops end up with illnesses, genetic problems, and temperament issues later in life. This is because in most cases, the puppy’s parents and the puppy are never checked by a qualified veterinarian who can assess if the parents should be bred at all or not. This leads to many puppies that come from pet shops having health problems, as well as, behavioral problems.

So next time you go to a pet store or pet shop and you see a puppy for sale, remember how that puppy got there and what will happen if you buy him. It may look like you are doing the right thing by saving the cute puppy but in reality you are just continuing the puppy mill cycle. It would be better to go and adopt a cute puppy from the shelter, purebred or not, for 0 than to pay ,000 and support puppy mills and dog overpopulation.

Find more information on responsible purebred dog breeders on our regularly updated dog blog. Responsible breeders are welcomed to join our dog breeders community, and showcase their healthy, sound dogs that reflect their proper breed standard.

Which Cat Food Bowls and Cat Food Dishes are safe for your Cats to eat from?

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Which Cat Food Bowls and Cat Food Dishes are safe for your Cats to eat from?

What Cat Bowls and Cat Food Dishes are Safe for my Cat to use?

Cat Food dishes are a very common and easily found cat food item. Yet sometimes, if there isn’t a shop in your near you might have to go online to find the right cat food dish. In which case you should first compare a few different cat food dishes and cat food bowls before desiding for one spesific cat food bowl.

You can also compare prices for your cat food dish in a few different shops, but mostly the prices for cat food dishes will be the same, since it’s such a low priced item any way…..

All cats need to eat from something and of course if you have a cat you will need to have a cat food dish or food bowl. There are the most common kinds of cat food dishes such as plastic food dish for cats, stainless steal cat food dish and a ceramic or porcelan cat food bowl.

Compare these three most common cat food dishes and cat food bowls to find which one is the right one for your cat!

There are three common kinds of cat food bowls and cat food dishes:

A ceramic or porcelan cat food dish A plastic cat food bowl A stainless steel cat food dish

A Ceramic or Porcelan Cat Food Dish

A lot of ceramic and porcelan cat food dishes are very beautifully decorated. Ceramic Cat food dishes are heavier then other cat food dishes and wont fall over if thrown around. However if you buy a fancy painted cat food bowl, make sure that it is marked “safe for food”. Some fancy, decorated and beautiful cat food dishes contain lead in the paint or glaze (or other things), which is poisonous when eaten by humans or pets. Usually if the food dishes are safe for people to use, then they will probably be safe for your cat.

Just check to make sure!

Plastic Cat Food Bowl – safe or not?

Plastic cat food bowls are commonly sold in pet supply stores and are easy to clean, can not be broken and are usually very cheap too.

Nevertheless, plastic cat food dishes are not highly recommended.
They tend to get scratched easily and could house bacteria that will make your cat or kitten sick.

The plastic cat food dishes also get slime on the sides and that can caus serious problems for your cat and for you too.

Our cats like to play with any water dish or cat food dish and fling them across the floor causing a lot of mess and water. There for plastic bowls aren’t recommended since they are easier to fling and knock over and can really caus a big mess!

WARNING: Sometimes, a very cheap plastic cat food dish might come with a very sharp edge that could perhaps cut your cats lips or skin. Therefor check any plastic cat food dishes before buying any cat food dish or bowl.

Stainless Steel Cat Food Bowls:

Stainless steel bowls are solled almost everywhere. Stainless steal cat food bowls are dishwasher safe and sturdy. However there are some minuses to consider before buying any stainless steal cat food dish….

Some people think that stainless steel cat food bowls are not a good choice either since they give the cat food a bad metallic taste. Although I never had a bad experience with steal cat food dishes, (since I have never bought a stainless steal cat food dish for my cats) I can imagine that it probably would have the same affect as our steal pott that made us sick!

However since i personly have not tried it, you could give it a go if you wanted to!

3 Cat Food Bowl Tips:

1. Whatever type of dishes you purchase, make sure they are washed out and refilled every day with clean fresh water.

2. Use a wet sponge to rub the sides and corners of the cat food dish to make sure that no bacterias and slime are growing there.

3. TIP: When you choose any cat food dishes for your cat, buy something that is sturdy, dishwasher safe and made of metal or ceramic that wont brake if your cat/s knock it over and wont make the cats food taste bad!
